FASTENERS Overview Course Outline Description: An introductory study of the hardware classed as fasteners. The introduction will cover fastener types, thread designations, classifications, used with bolts and nuts in industry today. Students will experience hands on identification and proper assembly of bolts, washers, and nuts. Objectives: Upon completion of this course the trainee should be able to: 1. Explain what is meant by the term €˜fastener€™. 2. Visually identify the differences between a fine and a course thread bolt and nut. 3. Describe the difference between a machine screw, set screw, and cap screw & hex bolt. 4. Describe appropriate order of assembly for bolts, lock washers, washers, & nuts etc 5. Describe when to replace with new fasteners rather than reusing them 6. Explain the concept of torque, and describe the proper tool and method of tightening.
